Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

Production and usage of LNG as the energy supply source considers to be one of the future long-range trend in the world economy.
LNG technology dynamically gains traditional for Russia segment of gas delivery and supply.

LNG comes not as a product itself but a way of natural gas transportation. Produced gas first gets compressed by quench at the proper enterprises, then taken by methane carriers to ports where it gets converted back to gasiform at special terminals and gets delivered to ultimate consumer through pipes.

This technology is used worldwide in view of difficulties in creating intercontinental trunk pipelines for gas delivery.

Comparing to pipelines CNG technology has a number of significantly important advantages.
1. CNG can be supplied from any establishment for gas liquefaction to any regasifying terminal.
2. CNG technology allows efficiently vary volume of output and gas delivery depending on the market.
3. CNG proves to be the only suitable and convenient technology for transoceanic transportation.

In fact, in Russia nowadays these companies liquefy gas:
1. “Cryogas”- Saint-Petersburg,
2. “Gazprom Transgaz Ekaterinburg”- in Pervouralsk, a complex for liquefying gas. In Ekaterinburg there is reconstruction at Gas-Distributing Station 4, project for production of liquefied gas, the output is 2,8 ton/hour.

CNG as a fuel:

It looks especially perspective to use gas as a motor fuel and the case is not only that gas is three times cheaper than oil. With the strict ecostandards as of now in the developed countries we observe impetuous increase of gas consumption as it less damages the environment comparing to traditional gasoline extracted from oil.

Prospects for CNG usage for transport (automotive vehicles):

1. CNG has steady potential for development than compressed natural gas
2. Compact version of equipment for putting at the site of functioning or new filling stations.
3. Application of filling stations within the city, possible only by way of regasification unit.
4. The process of conversion automobiles to natural gas slows down on the grounds of CNG filling stations lack. LNG regasification unit does not require gas pipelines and big spaces for installation.
5. In terms of safety degree the equipment is greatly secure than of any filling station. By its physical properties methane is the most safety fuel.

LNG advantages over CNG:

1. Gasification feasibility of distant regions without pipelines;
2. Higher purity of the product;
3. Resources for getting CNG without compressor equipment;
4. Mileage increase;
5. Nonavailability of high-pressure vessels and units;
6. Availability to get LNG straight from gas field and also at gas-distributing stations without compressor equipment.
7. Low multiple of the equipment weight to the unit of transported gas;
8. Increase of payload volume at vehicles;
9. High utilization of LNG refuellers due to low residual pressure.

LN gas is used for gasification of the utility and business users that located far from gas pipelines in different parts of the country and also for gas vehicles.

LNG in industry and public services:

Considerable advantages has LNG when using it as a fuel source at heat and power plants and boiler-houses:

At health-improving complex “Lake Glukhoye” the unit for storage and regasification with capacity of 0,3 t/h has been put into operation.  Derived gas has an application of fuel for boiler-house with capacity of 3 MW.

Outlook and facilities of universal LNG energy carrier is obviously out of dispute.

In 2007 in Ekaterinburg at gas-distributing station 4 “Gazprom Transgaz Ekaterinburg” started the project for LNG deriving with capacity of 2,8 t/h.

LNG vehicles:

First results showed considerable advantage of LNG vehicles in comparison to compressed gas vehicles. Thus, more than two times has increased the mileage without top-up, fuel rate decreased for 25%.
At present time there are facilities to convert a wide range of vehicles to LNG.
